Laura Hasn’t Slept (2020)

English A great short that was the basis for least year’s accomplished Smile. Laura doesn't want to fall asleep because in her dreams she is haunted by a man who wants to kill her and changes his face. Decent atmosphere, great craftsmanship, great make-up and a great scare. This is a good one. 4/5.

The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan (2023)

English A fan of historical big movies should not hesitate to go to the cinema. A French adaptation of the famous classic by Alexandre Dumas has arrived and I would say it is also the best to date. The huge budget is evident, the beautiful locations and settings are a delight and the best French stars are available: Vincent Cassel, Eva Green and Francois Civil. There are slight changes to the original story, so it's not an exact copy, but they are minor deviations that I welcome warmly. The new adaptation is without a doubt grittier, more action-packed, dirtier and darker. I was most impressed by the action shot in one take, which fits perfectly and is intense enough. I can't recall better filmed sword fights from other films. The finale in particular can lean on the attractive cathedral setting and the decent chaos that erupts there is delicious. All the actors do a good job and even the non-action passages where political intrigue builds up are entertaining. Certainly the film is also suitably suspenseful and atmospheric and visually impressive. I look forward to the second part. 7.5/10.

The Dream Log (2020)

English Very solid! It's got an idea, atmosphere, it's short, it's a perfect one-shot. The main character invents a tool to record his own dreams that I would love to have :) The apartment walk was decently disturbing. 7/10.

Close Your Eyes (2022)

English Strong 3 stars. Decent atmosphere for 3 minutes, and the ghost's apparition is definitely unpleasant and chilling. I'm not gonna lie :) 65%,.

Arcana (2015)

English Technically, it’s perfect, on par with a feature film. The make-up of the witch is wonderfully creepy (I can't think of a better portrayal of a witch – it begs for its own feature film), and it has that magical prison vibe. Too bad the finale had to be left to the viewer's imagination, otherwise a big thumbs up. 8/10.

Párty Hárder: Summer Massacre (2022)

English By Czech standards, it is a fine and wacky comedy, progressive in its conception and form. Some of the scenes are bordering on awkwardness and "over the line" (Vyšehrad is still the best in recent years in all aspects, hands down), and sometimes it was hard to understand (Adam Ernest is funny, but I would prefer if he spoke normally). I got it between 3 and 4 stars, but as soon as the Doctor was on, he is the best character also in the first one, I laughed out loud. I was also intrigued by the finale, which is very bold, gritty, bizarre and twisted as it should be. A stronger and more progressive experience than Banger in that respect for me, when it comes to drugs and partying.

Inside (2023)

English A boring survival drama without any genre pleasure. The setting of an expensive apartment is fine, but if there is zero threat, it simply can't work. Willem Dafoe does what he can, but it’s woeful. Overall a pointless film with no suspense, no adrenaline, no twist or anything interesting. Yawn. 3/10.

Emily the Criminal (2022)

English A small, low-key, but very gripping and suspenseful thriller starring the excellent Aubrey Plaza! Emily The Criminal is one of those films that doesn't really entice at first glance, it had been sitting in my Want To See folder for quite a while. I wasn't expecting anything from it, but I'm very pleasantly surprised with the result. What I got was proper thriller that may not have higher ambitions, but hooked me from the first minutes and didn't let go until the end. If a film can grab your attention like that, where you don't feel the urge to look at your mobile, then that's the calling card of a good film. Aubrey Plaza has quite possibly cut the best role of her career here, it's her One Woman Show. She plays a woman in debt who has done some jail time. She needs to get some money fast and hasn't been able to find a solid job. But she gets an interesting offer to make $200 an hour, so she takes a chance and before you know it, she's a member of a criminal gang focused on credit card forgery. For my money, a pretty decent look into a crime organization focusing on something I haven't seen a film about, so the premise alone makes the film compelling. Aubrey Plaza gets herself into some uncomfortable situations – you could cut the tension in the car purchase scene. It's well acted and skillfully shot, doesn't lack suspense and, most importantly manages, to entertain as well. I am satisfied and can safely recommend it further. 75%.

Tetris (2023)

English A superbly suspenseful drama about how the popular video game Tetris reached the whole world. Apple scores plus points. It stars the excellent Taron Egerton, who has matured as an actor with each film – I've liked this handsome guy since Kingsman, but he blew everyone's mind with his performance in Black Bird, and here he only confirms his qualities. Oscars are on their way soon and I wish him a happy choice of films in his acting career. What may have seemed like a dull and uninteresting story eventually turned into a gripping and thrilling ride that will have you gasping at times – that certainly doesn't happen often in the drama genre. On the plus side, it’s set in the USSR, where the main character arrives to buy the rights to Tetris, only to find that things work differently in this country and nothing will be easy. Even though most of the film is about trading Tetris rights, it does have a decent amount of drive and energy. The scary KGB, the communists, the rules, I can't think of a better portrayal of Russian communism in film. There are a few unexpected twists and turns, the whole thing is superbly shot (the graphic 8 bit inserts are impressive), the actors are all excellent, the atmosphere is chilling and gripping, and the whole thing culminates in a thrilling car chase that would put Bond to shame. 8/10.

Transfigure (2021)

English The dark side of Photoshop. An original concept and great practical effects. Dylan Clark is quite good here and I wasn’t expecting that final shot. Decent work. 7/10.
