London, 1974. As Britain prepares for electrical blackouts to sweep across the country, trainee nurse Val arrives for her first day at the crumbling East London Royal Infirmary. With most of the patients and staff evacuated to another hospital, Val is forced to work the night shift in the empty building. Within these walls lies a deadly secret, forcing Val to face her own traumatic past in order to confront the malevolent force that’s intent on destroying everything around her. (Acorn Media UK)

English Debutant Corinna Faith has made a ghostly film that, at least in its first half, manages to captivate with a rather unpleasant atmosphere and a convincing Rose Williams in the lead role. Unfortunately, the closer we get to the end, the more it becomes apparent that the director-screenwriter may have had too much ambition and can't quite pull off the themes she introduces. The Power ultimately wants to say too much and thus trips over its own feet in the finale. ()

English A nice British period ghost story that has some current social insight, but thankfully doesn't forget that horror is supposed to scare the viewer at least a little bit. A semi-abandoned hospital in the middle of London in the 1970s, at a time of regular all-night power cuts, is the perfect place for such a scare. The Power may be a bit slow to get going, but the central night sequence had me purring in delight. A really nicely made thing that can unsettle and give chills. I was looking forward to that mood lasting to the end; alas, it didn't. The ending was a bit ham-fisted, but on the other hand it offered a relatively meaningful conclusion and did not spoil the overall positive impression. ()

English The greatest charm of The Power is the frequent uncertainty about which angle we are currently watching the plot from and what level of reality the film is currently operating at. This is aided not only by the learned practices with the drama (it's not a Blum-esque day-night-day-night, but just one night), the second plan, and especially the strange editing between scenes (which feels so weird that at times I couldn't tell if it was the intention to unsettle or just plain bad editing). These factors make it easy to immerse yourself in the creepy world of the darkened hospital. Unfortunately, the viewer is brought back down to earth through a few topical clichés (when a white man shows up on the scene, the plot is practically wrapped up, no matter how much the film tries to pretend we're in for a big reveal) and Rose Williams, who plays a naive nurse like a schoolgirl in a porn movie. English An enjoyable, if not revelatory "haunted house" gothic horror film, where the atmosphere of an old mansion is replaced by an old hospital and a mysterious ghost delivers a social and women empowerment message. It's not particularly virtuosic and refreshing like His House, but it kept me going in the dark with no problem. ()

English The Power is a movie that manages to deliver a perfect period setting and backdrop according to the horror genre, unfortunately, we have seen its denouement a million times before, and its ghost movie tropes could satisfy perhaps only very unsophisticated horror audiences. Moreover, the movie forces an unnecessarily literal message illuminating what is actually the secondary meaning of the title The Power. As a result, the ending wallows in its own pomposity and did not work for me at all. ()
