‘There is no science nor progression of thought without love, without passion, without identification.’ So says the subject of Luísa Homem’s absorbing two-hour portrait – a geographer who lived an extraordinary life of travel, research and adventure, and who survived into her nineties to tell Homem her story. As soon as Suzanne Daveau graduated in geography at the tail-end of the Second World War, she headed into the wider world to seek subjects for scientific study – a time, needless to say, when women didn’t commonly take such adventurous journeys. Weaving together interviews, photographs and home movies as she explores Daveau’s perspectives on such subjects as family, feminism and modernity, Homem paints an immersive portrait of a woman fascinated by the world around her – and consumed by an insatiable hunger to explore it.
