Never was this more true than on that fateful night in Istanbul where a lacklustre Liverpool, 3-0 down to AC Milan at half-time in the 2005 Champions League Final, turned to their midfield general and “Stevie G” did not disappoint. The subsequent Gerrard-inspired comeback has gone down as maybe the greatest Champions League Final of all time and will certainly be remembered as one of the greatest night in Liverpool’s history, at least in the modern era. Liverpool fans owe so much to the man who turned down better offers, both in terms of money and opportunities for silverware, time and again throughout his career in order to stay with his beloved Reds. The Premier League does not feel quite the same without him and it will never again see the familiar sight of a Gerrard screamer nestling in the top corner.
