In late 1945, Bert Röling, judge and professor of Indonesian Law, is invited to take a seat on the Tokyo Tribunal. It will administer justice to Japanese war criminals. In the long two and a half years away from home, Röling begins to love this Asian country, despite everything. Based on true events, in which the protagonist increasingly struggles with an inner conflict: should he remain loyal to the politically biased interests of his government, or to his conscience - as an independent judge?
