Gjest Baardsen was a well known clever thief around 1800. He takes from the rich and gives to the poor, and is feared and loved. No chains can hold him. He once saves the girl Anna Reincke from being married to an old man and later from the accusation of a small theft. They run away together disguised, and live as outlaws in the mountain for some time. They love each other, and Gjest decides to take his punishment in prison so that he at last can be free and live togheter with Anna as a law-abiding man. (Norsk Filminstitutt)
