Mrs. Takács, a widow and a postmistress living in the country, is about to marry her two daughters. Teri, the elder of the two sisters, would be the first to marry, but she is off to Pest, taking her dowry, 5000 pengoes, sewed in a chequered coat. She wants to buy a pension known as "Better here than home", which she wants to run so that it might become a flourishing business. The place swarms with guests unwilling to pay. These characters are introduced by the former owner of the pension as rich persons with private means. Teri falls in love with János, a composer. Laczffy and János are trying to prevent the girl from running an unprofitable business, therefore Laczffy steal the coat. The coat, however, starts it peculiar progress. meanwhile Teri's mother turns the pension into a profitable business. The coat is eventually found, so everybody's dream comes true.
