The tireless director, Werner Herzog, lover of diehard elements and strong heroes, decided in 1984 to participate in an expedition of the famous mountaineer and traveller, Reinhold Messner. He decided, only accompanied by Hans Kammerlander, to climb the eight-thousand-metre Himalayan peaks, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. Rather than a classic climbing documentary movie, Herzog made a psychological study of hardship and courage using Messner's handheld camera. To the top! Let's fight nature! (Visions of Light)
