Using recently discovered archive film in original colour, this is the story of the man who created modern China, but at a terrible price for millions of his people. Almost all the material has never before been seen , and includes unique footage from the former communist world. We begin with the earliest colour material of Mao, shot in the late 1940s during the Civil War against Chiang Kai Shek's Kuomintang, before charting the tumultuous waters of Mao's rule, and finally his gradual demise during the 1970s.
