Plots(1)

Potters Bluff, Rhode Island, may seem to be a sleepy little town, at least for the casual visitor and the local sheriff, Daniel Gillis. However, all of a sudden, there are a lot of strange murders where strangers or people passing through are killed by mobs of townspeople. Only Sheriff Gillis has no clue to what's going on. Fortunately, the town has an excellent undertaker, William G. Dobbs, who is happy to take care of this sudden death-wave which is good for his business. Gillis soon discovers clues that lead to many of the local inhabitants involved in the killings, including his own wife Janet. (Shock Entertainment)

English Dead & Buried has “some” atmosphere along the lines of 1980s American horror flicks, but not the mysterious atmosphere of the similarly conceived The Fog, for example. It occasionally comes across as an unfortunately naïve horror movie, but the surprising denouement saves it. ()

English This was my first meeting with the Shockproof Film Festival and it was a properly wacky horror trip. There’s probably no point in trying to describe the story. What intrigued me, however, was the atmosphere, as it seemed to allude to the best of Lovecraft, the plotline included. The entire thing is properly gloomy and moderately scary with a bit of gore. But the atmosphere is the best thing about it. ()

English The dense Lovecraftian atmosphere of a backwater coastal village with crazed murderous inhabitants grabs you right from the start. The rest is then kept on the move by Stan Winston's terrific work, properly horrific set design (the ending with the projectors), and decent cinematography. It's just a shame that the dialogue fell victim to the film's radical change in genre (it was originally intended to be a horror comedy) following a change of sponsor. ()
