How can a man leave a trace that will remain after he is gone – or after his soul has left this world? He makes a picture. In his monumental Minä olen (1992), Markku Lehmuskallio recorded a vast number of artwork belonging to the people of the Arctic. Art has also been a recurring feature in his movies directed together with Anastasia Lapsui. Eleven Images of Human reflects a deep understanding for different cultures. The film travels like a spirit across five continents, from the time of Cro Magnon man to the contemporary, from the striations of caves up in the circling sky. Man paints a picture on cave wall, puts it on a canvas and draws. He looks at himself in the mirror and dances the dance of life. And the picture is an immortalized moment of that dance, an imprint that persists even though the original rendition will be lost in time.
