"Lost River" is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. Huh? Ryan Gosling took a momentary break from acting to delve into directing and writing, creating something reminiscent of his directorial peers, whom he had previously acted for. However, in reality, it's more akin to the works of Herschell Gordon Lewis (whom I quite like), except Gosling painstakingly tries to imbue it with a depth that he himself doesn't quite find. I like Ryan as an actor, but after his debut, his eventual next films won't be something I'll seek out.
