One Square Mile

The ratings on this site that all point towards a perfect average score didn’t discourage me from the movie; on the contrary. I must say that it was worth it in the end. The boy’s home situation is a disaster in all regards and to make us pity him even more, nothing is his own fault and his family dragged him into all of this. And then this little boy discovers a hidden talent for running. He finds an old dude who drinks like a fish and who decides to help him out because he sees himself during his best years in this boy. And so, they start training for a better life. One super important race offers prospects of a university scholarship and an escape from this environment that smells like trouble. And even though the boy doesn’t really express a whole lot of emotions, I couldn’t but be happy for him. I simply liked the movie even despite the mediocrity and it was a joy to watch. Despite it being really raw here and there, just like life can be. (16/03/2015)

Quite an interesting combination of striving to be the best and striving to live. However, it is not as unconventional as it tries to tell us, you just have a feeling that the hope for something better is even less here than elsewhere. There are good, believable characters, but some of the lines that come out of their mouths are not exactly the best. Because running is not about the body, but it's about the mind. (09/07/2014)
