The winner of the Best Debut award at the Locarno film festival and the founding work of Novo Cinema - Portuguese New Wave. Paulo Rocha's film about a young country boy who tries to make it as a shoemaker's apprentice in a modern city is undoubtedly inspired by French New Wave that influenced Rocha during his studies at Paris IDHEC at the turn of the 1960s.
