Romantic drama following an attraction that develops between a doctor and patient. The life of Dr. Merek Vance (Alan Ladd) is poles apart from that of rich society girl Emily Blair (Loretta Young). Though the two grew up together, Merek now attends to the medical needs of Pittsburgh's poor while Emily is preparing to marry the equally wealthy Jeff Stoddard (Barry Sullivan). However, when a bout of meningitis causes Emily to lose her hearing, Vance begins to take an interest in her case. The doctor believes he may be able to develop a serum that will cure her, but as Jeff begins to withdraw from his ill fiancée will the relationship between Merek and Emily remain purely professional?
