A rich merchant family of colonial goods has a painting from the 15th century, entitled The Virgin and the Kidling. Huben does not want to sell this family property, but except for her widowed daughter, Margit nobody else cares for family traditions. When they go bankrupt, Huben has a copy made of the picture and sells the original to Perdy Kálmán, lumber-man. Perdy has long been in love with Margit and would like to marry her now, but she refuses. Only after a lot of hardships, suffering and when family traditions are destroyed does she accept the marriage offer. (official distributor synopsis)
