James McAvoy is Brian Jackson, a wide-eyed working class kid whose exhaustive grasp of general knowledge leaves him wanting when it comes to women. On his way to achieving his long held ambition to appear on University Challenge, he falls in love with fellow student and team-mate Alice, has his conscience pricked (as well as other things) by rights activist Rebecca, and all whilst trying not to become the student w***er that his hometown mates think he'll turn into! A well-balanced mix of comedy, romance and drama with a soundtrack that couldn't possibly be bad, given that the film is set in 1980s Britain. Of the actors, I was most pleased with the excellent Benedict Cumberbatch, whose every look was worth it, and of the actresses, Rebecca Hall did it for me. The end of the knowledge competition was perfect.
