The film condenses the awkwardness of country and functionary existence, consumer thinking based on paternalistic relationships into the sequence of events of 20 August, the feast of the Hungarian new loaf with sentimental irony and documentary credibility. A railwayman's family on the Balaton highlands expects the Budapest relative with his functionary boss and family. Wanting to serve a Lucullian lunch, Mrs. Kajtár, the house lady terrorises everybody in order to forward the prosperity of her two children. There are three people who regard the "sacrifice" strangely: the two youth who've got different goals in life than the one planned by their mother, and the dyspeptic functionary himself.
