The wife of Baron Hargittay András, landowner, is known to have died young. To cheer up Erzsike, his orphan daughter, he takes on an acrobat to entertain her, but, following the advice of the family doctor, he decides that his daughter needs a mother, so he marries Mária, his long-time love, with whom he had split up before his marriage due to some misunderstanding. Erzsike, frightened by the tales told by her relative, Ibolya, about a wicked stepmother, escapes so that she does not have to meet her new mother, ending up in a boarding school. Mária, who, apart from trying to become a good wife and a good mother at the same time, eventually wins favours with the little girl as her teacher. Erzsike accepts her happily as her mother.
