Bors István, a son born out of wedlock to the wealthy landowner, Tulogdy István, inherits the Tulogdy fortune, including the castle, in which the deceased man's brother, Kálmán, lives with his wife and two daughters, Kati and Ilonka. Ilonka has plans to make a living on her own as a teacher, and she is also engaged to be married. So far, Bors has been living nearby as the poor estate coachman. He goes to see his estate, where he is met by the angry Tulogdy Kálmán. Bors threatens him with an action at law, which he duly wins. He slowly learns to act according to his new position. Ilonka trains him to adopt high society manners, and develops a liking for the young man. Feelings seem to be reciprocal. Bors eventually proposes to her, and she happily consents.
