The orphan of the Treasurer to the Sultan is used as a servant at the house of Brazovics Athanáz, the wealthy grain merchant of the town of Komárom. Although the millionaire Tímár marries Tímea, their marriage is an unblessed one. The mourning, sorrowful and cold woman continues to be in love with Kadisha, the handsome Hussar officer. Tímár learns to know what true love is on the Island of Nobody, by the side of Noémi, who radiates happiness. For years, he leads a double life, but eventually grows tired of pretensions, and throwing away his riches, disappears from the eyes of the world in order to live the rest of his life with his beloved in their out-of-the-world Garden of Eden, enabling thereby even Tímea to be happy by lieutenant Kadisha's side.
