Timid and self-deprecating, Judith Hearne (Maggie Smith in a BAFTA Award winning performance) is a middle-aged piano teacher living in 1950s Dublin. A spinster who yearns for more from her small world, she finds appeal in her new boarding-house neighbour James Madden (Bob Hoskins).
