This Czech documentary produced by HBO as part of the serial Bez cenzury, explores the theme of singles, that is economically independent and unattached people. Director Jana Počtová followed for one year six men and women who live without permanent partners. She examines their characters and lifestyles, trying to discover why
they live without family ties. She asks them whether they are looking for partners or whether they have given up all attempt to build up a steady relationship. Framed by the changing seasons, this group portrait deals with individuals’ chances of living as a couple and fears of inexorably elapsing time. It observes the protagonists’
attitudes to sex and the current transformations of the roles of men and women. It asks the viewers whether long-term relationships are a relic of the past or an unattainable ideal. The documentary, whose theme concerns almost 30% of our population, was chosen for the international project Docu Talents from the East, presented at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It will come out on 14 July and will be premiered on the HBO movie channel on 25 August. (official distributor synopsis)

English "My new friend, the wet spot.” Generation Singles would be a fine documentary for television, but given its title, I expected from it a more professional look into the given issue. It lacks opinions from sociologists and psychologists, for which the viewpoints of the singles addressed in the film, though sensibly formulated and delivered without excessive emotion, do not provide a sufficient substitute. Without broader context, it is actually just a chronicle of the lives of several intelligent people whom you will either identify with or whose opinions you will reject, probably on the basis of your own status (not psychological). In other words, Generation Singles is essentially about singles, by singles and for singles. 60% ()
