Weekend is set in the archipelago of Eastern Norway and takes place just a little off-season. The story soon takes on the characteristics of a nightmare where the line between reality and fantasy blurs. On a late-summer Saturday, Kai and Berit Strand, while on their way to their summer house, are forced to return home to pick up a forgotten key. Meanwhile, a young couple, high on drugs, Allan and TK, have broken into their home. As the Strands return, the young couple manages to sneak out of the house and steal the Strands Landrover, unaware that the Strands little daughter, Cecilie, is asleep in the back seat of the car. A desperate and surrealistic trip ends at the Strands originally intended destination. As the emotionally disturbed Allan discovers too late, TKs choice of abduction victim is not random. Her choice is determined by events which occurred twelve years earlier: a tragedy involving two small girls, identical as two drops of water, separated by an accident. The drama, which reaches its climax in the archipelago, involves revenge, unfulfilled love, and old ghosts - and insanity born of living out lifes great lie. (Norsk Filminstitutt)
