A religious Jewish couple in a village by the Tisza have spent their lives trying to beget a descendant. Finally in 1943 Job adopts a Christian child from the orphanage so that they will have an heir to their humanism, knowledge, house and land. The family spends a happy year together. Jób and Róza are trying to make good use of time and provide for Lackó's future. They build a house for Jani and Ilka, so that they can entrust the boy to them. When the house is built, they give Lackó over and lock themselves up waiting for deportation. Lacika does not understand anything and he can only take their smiling faces as a goodbye memory.
