Phil Alden Robinson's Field of Dreams is a mesmerizing tale of resilience, faith and conviction. Inspired by a voice he can't ignore to pursue a dream he can hardly believe, struggling Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) faces one of the most challenging dilemmas of his life. Haunted by echoes of the past, the message is an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm. Fulfilling the unusual request, Ray is visited by the ghosts of ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. As the voices continue to stir Ray's imagination, he seeks out reclusive author Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) to help him understand the meaning his quest and discover the purpose for his remarkable field. English Field of Dreams is beautifully filmed, but it’s too much of an overly sweet fairy tale. I like poetic films, but if it weren’t for James Horner’s magical soundtrack, which I already knew very well, I would have been rather bored by this. ()

English I actually had to adjust the mode pretty quickly when I realized that Field of Dreams is really poetic. I originally imagined anything but that. At that point I began to dive into the ideas that this story has, which are essentially really nice. It’s just a shame that I started getting there only towards the ending. And the American farming life, Iowa, cornfields and baseball are not my cup of tea either, so that’s another reason for three stars. Baseball actually doesn’t need to be related to the premise at all and you still won’t get rid of it. ()
