Madeleine Beudet is very unhappy in her bourgeois marriage to Monsieur Beudet. She escapes reality by playing the piano. One day, Monsieur Beudet receives tickets to see Faust, but Madame Beudet refuses to go with him. Alone in the family house, with the piano locked by her husband, she tries to evade reality with the help of her imagination, but her husband’s reminiscences won’t let her, and that’s when that desire to escape becomes a murderous desire.
