Dorothy McGuire made her film debut in CLAUDIA, repeating the role she created on the stage in Rose Frankens play. Two years before, in 1941, the same material was used in a radio show, "Claudia and David," based on the Redbook stories by Franken. Its little more than the epic of a young bride who is incredibly naive, nervously impulsive, sometimes vague, but always charming. Young is McGuires very tolerant husband, who tries to be supportive as his young wife learns to cope with the tribulations of marriage. Claire scores well as Claudias mother, a woman doomed to death from the fade-in, and yet that doesnt detract from the essential warm heartedness of the picture. Its funny without being side splitting and sentimental without being mawkish. All-in-all, quite a lovely film with no single "story" to speak of but with enough incidents to fill out 91 minutes under Gouldings deft handling. (Sequel: CLAUDIA AND DAVID.)
