Screenwriter, script editor and director; or rather an author whose works significantly influenced Czechoslovak film. Without him, the pivotal films by Juraj Jakubisko or Elo Havetta wouldn't exist. Without him, there would be no perfect adaptation of the novel Oil Lamps. He was a burden to the normalization regime, and understandably so, which compelled him move to the Bavarian Munich, where he carried on with his artistically unambiguous work. Today he is one of the key educators at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and supports the creation of original authorial projects as a committee member at the State Cinematography Fund. He dramaturgically partook in our process of selecting the films for his profile. Because of that, the selection includes his Chekov adaptation, Ark of Fools; a movie finished 20 years after its creation because of the intervention of censorship. His German period is represented by a wonderful documentary portrait of Marlene Dietrich. In the new millennium he returned to the Slovak scene with a short documentary film portrait of his friend, the glass artist Palo Macho, called Glass Paintings.
