Biography

He has worked in cinema, theatre and television. He has written and directed the short films Domingo siete (awarded in 1996 with the Ariel award by the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias y Artes Cinematográficas), En vivo (2002), El número 23 (2002), Medalla al empeño (2004) and 40 grados a la sombra (awarded with the Danzante award in the Iberoamerican Contest at the 37th Huesca International Film Festival, best short film script at the Shorts Film Festival Mexico 2009, and the Cibervoto del Público at the 31st Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in La Habana). He is the scriptwriter for the feature film Pachito Rex (2001) and for various programmes and television series. He has written and directed the documentary mini-series El siglo de Oro de la Melancolía (2004), presented by Roger Bartra, and awarded with the prize Pantalla de Cristal for Best Documentary Script. He is considered one of the most outstanding Mexican playwrights of today, with plays such as 1822, el año que fuimos Imperio (2000), Lascurain o la brevedad del poder (2005) and Edip en Colofón (2009, commissioned by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro). His plays have also been performed in Australia, Argentina and Japan. His career has been recognised with a distinction award by the Universidad Nacional and the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. He has taught in Colombia and Puerto Rico. Currently, he is a script professor at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica and at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
