Biography

Born in 1953 in the neighbourhood of l’Estaque, Marseille, to an Armenian father and German mother. In the mid-70’s he moved to Paris to study Economics and Social Sciences. He debuted as a director in 1980 with Dernier été, in conjunction with Franck le Wita and whose story takes place in his old neighbourhood. For this film he surrounded himself with a group of friends, technicians and actors, headed by Ariane Ascaride, Gérard Meylan and JeanPierre Darroussin, who have starred in most of his films. He is one of the founders of Agat Films and Ex Nihilo, production companies of many French filmmakers, and with which he has financed his fiction and documentaries for television. In his filmography, there are other films, such as À la vie, à la mort! (1995), Marius et Jeannette (1997), Marie-Jo et ses 2 amours (2001), Le promeneur du Champ de Mars (2004), Le voyage en Arménie (2006) and Lady Jane (2008).
