Biography

After studying literature and art, he made his first short film (Copyright, 1979) and began collaborating as a screenwriter with French filmmaker André Téchiné. As a contributor to the magazine Cahiers du cinema, he became one of the leading critics of Asian cinema. His first film (Désordre, 1986) won the Fipresci Prize at the Venice Film Festival. With several films at Cannes and numerous international awards, Assayas remains one of the most important filmmakers in contemporary French cinema.
