She made his university studies (English Language and Philosophy) at the city of New York. She made her debut in film in 1972, in Arturo Ripstein’s El castillo de la pureza, a film for which she was already awarded several prizes. Between 1973 and 1978 she lived in Oxford, England, where she studied Alexander Technique and took part in E.T.C. (Experimental Theatre Club) in Oxford University. In parallel with her work in film, she has also worked in theatre with plays including Santísima by Sergio Magaña (1981), A streetcar named desire by Tennessee Williams (in the role of Stella –1982- and in the role of Blanche Du Bois -1996-), Las dos Fridas by Oceransky, Farías y Córcega (1989), Los negros pájaros del adiós by Oscar Liera (1990), Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda by Sabina Berman (1993), Master Class by Terrence Mc Nally (1999) and Dangerous Liaisons by Christopher Hampton (2001). From the mid-eighties, she has also taken part in several soap operas such as Cuna de lobos (1986), Cadenas de amargura (1991) or El vuelo del águila (1992). Among her extensive filmography as an actress, which includes over thirty movies with very important directors such as Arturo Ripstein, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Miguel Littin, Juan Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura o Alfonso Cuarón, we could mention the following: El castillo de la pureza by Arturo Ripstein (Ariel Award: Best actress ex-aequo, 1972); Actas de Marusia by Miguel Littin (Nomination to Ariel Award: Best actress, 1975); El infierno de todos tan temido by Sergio Olhovich (Ariel Award: Mejor actress ex-aequo, 1979); Antonieta by Carlos Saura (1981); Entre Pancho Villa y una mujer desnuda by Sabina Berman and Isabel Tardán (Nomination to Ariel Award: Best actress, 1995); Y tu mamá también by Alfonso Cuarón (2001). She is the President of the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences.
