He Who Can't Marry (2006) (series)

English If you didn't already know it, Abe Hiroshi is a really good actor. He's done a lot of movies and TV shows, but to be honest, it was his role as Kuwano that stuck with me the most. His gestures, his tone of voice, his looks. It all stuck in my mind, so I would say he's really worth seeing. It's a comedy, it's supposed to be romantic, but you know how they do romance in Japan – a little different than say Korea or America, no grand gestures, no gallons of tears shed. The guys here in particular express their affection differently. But it doesn't matter, because it's still fun to watch. It's a relationship movie on every level. After Abe, the biggest genius is the ugly dog, who I didn't find so ugly after all. A better 3 stars.

Blood Blockade Battlefront (2015) (series)

English Definitely not a bad anime. Nice animation, I only skipped the opening twice; on the contrary, I always left the ending on and enjoyed it immensely. The story and characters are kind of average, it doesn't bring anything new, but it doesn't need to be ashamed of its existence. Unfortunately, despite the relatively positive reviews, I was bored with the anime and felt that maybe three or four episodes were fillers, or at least partly. Such an empty nothing. If you want to fight supernatural creatures and don't want to do it for too long, this series is perfect. A better 2 stars.

Tókjó rabu sutorí (1991) (series)

English A decent relationship show, the relationships between the characters were portrayed very realistically. Honami gave it juice, Oda prudence, Eguchi promiscuity, and Arimori that Japanese femininity. The series belongs to the golden era of Japanese TV series and it's no wonder it has become a classic. If you want to watch a series that focuses on portraying relationships between diverse characters, this is the one to watch. The performances of the actors and actresses weren't embarrassing either. Everything had its place and its "destiny", so it didn't break out of the established normality. The whole thing is bittersweet – until the very end. A very good 3 stars.

Bandage (2010)

English The film gives some insight into a particularly turbulent time for a few people. They don't know what’s going on, they don't know what they feel, but they know that what is happening now is not what they want because... well, they just don't know. They're slowly figuring out the path they actually want to take, and it goes without saying that they're going to make a lot of mistakes. Except that they're young, so plenty of mistakes can be corrected, and there's always a way around. Because nothing is definitive. The film finds itself at a crossroads and we watch how the characters decide and where they go wrong. If you’re expecting a big ending, then for what? There's no need. Definitely an interesting film that has something to tell people who don't know. That's why the title is so apt. A better 3 stars.

Imprisoned: Survival Guide for Rich and Prodigal (2015)

English It's way too melodramatic for my tastes, for something that tries to pass itself off as a comedy. The story of how a spoiled brat is raised by a prison and becomes a proper and contributing member of society. Unfortunately with a very unappealing narrator. Only the ending with the reference to My Love Who Came From the Stars was good.

The Priests (2015)

English The fact that the movie didn't bring anything new to the exorcism genre doesn't bother me, I feel like it's so exhausted that for it to have something new in it, aliens would have to come to exorcise the devil out of the American president or something... Except that even though I quite like the subject matter, this movie bored me beyond belief. It was only the process of the exorcism itself that was interesting, I thought it was very well done. The subsequent action with the pig was not so good. And all the slow motion before that didn't appeal to me at all; the film lacked momentum. It had some atmosphere, but unfortunately it couldn't draw me in. If you like Gang Dong-won and exorcisms of all kinds, definitely check it out. A better 2 stars.

Forget Me Not (2015)

English An ordinary story full of love, disappointment, and emptiness. Imagine that everyone around you has Alzheimer’s, and they don't remember you, just you. How would you feel, what would you do, how would you live your life, if in the context of human relationships you only have today? I have to commend the performances of Murakami and Hayami, Murakami in particular was very good and convincing, even though he didn't say anything you could read what was going on in his expression. A nice film full of pain but also joy and precious moments. I know a lot of people complain about the ending, but I thought it was neither open-ended nor underdeveloped – it was strong and made it clear how Azusa made her decision and how much Takashi loved her. A better 4 stars.

Robotics;Notes (2012) (series)

English It was quite boring at first, to the point where I was afraid I wouldn't finish it. But during the rather uninteresting tedium revolving around building a robot as part of a school club, you could occasionally catch the glimpse of an interesting background, which the story kept slipping on. In the end, it's a completely average anime that doesn't have an annoying/weepy main character (that's a plus!). Also, I don't have a very positive relationship with robots, so that's also probably why I didn't enjoy it as much as people who like them. It's a slow anime that builds up in miniature steps until it finally culminates in saving the world. As always.

Robo-G (2012)

English Even though it's less than two hours long, I found it too long. Even though it was made by Yaguchi, it wasn't as lively as the rest of his "hits". Nothing interesting actually happened, nor was it as entertaining as I expected it to be. Having been spoiled by other Yaguchi films, this is just an ordinary mediocre film for me.

Splash Splash Love (2015) (series)

English A hilarious comedy trip to Joseon to see the king who is inventing hangul. I like that the heroine doesn't freak out so much after being transported into the past, but instead thinks things through nicely. It's got funny moments, then yucky moments, but all in all it's an ordinary story whose ending I didn't much care for. That doesn't negate the fact that Seul-gi Kim is a talented actress. A better 3 stars.
