Tokyo Ghoul - Root A (2015) (season)

English I want to provide balance and explain why I like Tokyo Ghoul. 1) It is action-packed. People are different, their moods are different, and there is always a viewer in the right mood for any style or genre. Even I have moments when I want to watch a no-brainer, where there is tons of gore in fight scenes with nice visuals. I am not looking for the meaning of life, the universe and everything in this show; I want to sit back and watch who is going to fuck up who. I could watch wrestling or Die Hard, although the former does not amuse me because of the muscular participants (I do not like bodybuilders and half-naked men in general and women's wrestling; a girl with a bicep bigger than my thigh is not thrilling to me and scares me). Plus, I know they are just acting. I have seen the latter so often that I know it almost by heart. 2) It has a dark atmosphere. I am not a fan of horror movies, so finding something that does not explicitly scare me but at the same time has a dark story is quite difficult for me. Otherwise, I understand that a person who has seen some horror might find this show a bit weak and lacking in atmosphere, although it has enough of an atmosphere even if it were not a five-star show. 3) The characters. Sure, most of them are as flat as a board, and I must admit that I had the urge to slap Ken Kaneki for his pacifism in the first season. On the other hand, some of the supporting characters were pretty good. I thought Kureo Mado, the investigator was good in particular. He seemed to be a very interesting person. Most of all, I liked "Gourmet" because of the enthusiasm he showed when wanting to eat Kaneki. Sure, I guess I have a strange selection of favorites. However, since I have watched shows with characters like Hisoka or Kenpachi Zaraki, my tastes are broader, so I like even personalities well outside the norm. In this respect, it should be added that the number of such madmen increased many times in the second season, and so for someone like me who likes watching psychopaths kick the crap out of each other, this is bliss. 4) The twists. True, the plot crawls, and there is no point in thinking about some of its aspects, especially whether it makes any sense because I risk having a laughing fit. However, there are moments when it is quite surprising. I will steal the question of who expected ""Geralt" to go over to the side of the bad guys" apart from manga readers? Conclusion: Tokyo Ghoul is not a philosophical work. Tokyo Ghoul is a sheer wrestling match between a group of total lunatics dressed up in nice visuals with a dark atmosphere. This combination corresponds to the tastes of many undemanding viewers. It could even be considered above-average if it satisfies the mood for simple diversionary entertainment in the demanding viewer. Add to this the fact that many people (I count myself among them) rate movies not only on their merits and qualities but also on the intensity of the feeling they get from the material. Given the action-packed scenes and dark aspect of the plot, that feeling could be quite intense, plus you have to consider ratings given to something else could be exaggerated considering the quality of the work. Unfortunately, the last episode and its treatment killed my substantial amount of enthusiasm and altered my perspective of the movie. I also have to say that I have not seen an ending this bad in a long time. Certainly, I did not expect any deep thoughts but at least some kind of point or confrontation of differing opinions.

Kaiba (2008) (series)

English Other reviewers on FilmBooster have mentioned the way the visuals are off-putting. However, I, for one, would give the anime's creators credit for the contrast between what this show looks like and what it is about, which seemed unreal to me. So I spent most of the time staring with my eyes popping out, trying to understand how something this crazy could have such a deep, dark, sometimes even depressing narrative and how the combination could work together so well. Plus, the moment I got over the initial surprise and started to pick up on what I was watching, I also found myself perfectly caught up in the unique atmosphere. I enjoyed it until the very last episode. I think this show is exceedingly unique in showing a crazy setting combined with the brilliant idea of Kaiba's universe and that you can transfer someone's mind and memories to someone else's body. This show is not afraid to show the twisted and unhinged sides of things. So this anime series has earned my full appreciation.

The Last: Naruto the Movie (2014)

English For someone like me, who quit watching Naruto last November, when I finished the last chapter of the manga, seemed this movie like a cool thing to add some extra plot to fill the gap between the last two chapters of the manga. I also finished watching the Naruto: Shippuden anime series somewhere around the three-hundredth episode mark because I was not into the crazy fillers anymore. I found this movie’s narrative not particularly groundbreaking. It is more of a heavyweight love story, so it will probably appeal more to women and fans of the two main protagonists. But if you are a fan of the anime series, this is probably a must-see. However, be warned; if you are still struggling with the anime series and have not read the manga and therefore have no idea how it will end or who Naruto will end up with, then definitely do not watch this yet.

Baccano! (2007) (series)

English Baccano! is a brilliant mix of fun, action, suspense, mystery, and romance. In addition, you get a perfect show when you add amazing characters, a great atmosphere, and really interesting processing, which requires a lot of attention so that the viewer does not miss the individual connections. Almost everything has already been said on FilmBooster by other reviewers, so I am just going to confirm that Isaac and Miria are a brilliant duo. Besides them, I liked Firo, Ennis, Ladd, and Rail Tracer. However, the other characters were great, and even Jacuzzi, who was a bit of a pain in the ass for the first three episodes, showed what he was made of. I also have to say that this was an anime series where I never once skipped the opening, not only because almost all the characters are introduced for the sake of orientation, but mainly because I just liked the music.

Space☆Dandy (2014) (series)

English I was expecting many things, and I was a bit afraid that it would be terrible crap. However, I was really entertained, it was good fun (three stars), there was an incredible amount of originality (five stars), the animation and soundtrack were pretty good (three stars), the characters were great (five stars), and it has a fascinating narrative (four stars). In other words, Space☆Dandy pleasantly surprised me. Space☆Dandy is an excellent show, and perhaps I did not roll around on the floor laughing like some others, but I still had a good laugh anyway.

Yatterman Night (2015) (series)

English The first part of this season was very good, and it almost looked like we could expect some really interesting things from this show. Unfortunately, the second part obliterated this enthusiasm, and the third part did not resolve where this show was headed. After a while, you realize that this is a dark anime series with a social subtext about a young girl's struggle against society. However, it is also a hilarious romp full of over-the-top nonsense and crazy mecha. I think it is an OK combination. As I have watched the 2008 Yatterman anime series, which is supposed to be a sort of indirect prequel, I could enjoy even the initially silly and over-the-top nonsense. I could enjoy it because, as I guessed quite correctly, the crazy mecha and over-the-top nature of some situations combined with the slightly crazy sense of humor is what this anime series is. Plus, viewers familiar with the prequel would probably be disappointed by the absence of any of those elements. As far as the characters are concerned, I thought the young Leopard and her evil laugh were good. As far as her two sidekicks are concerned, they are not too bad either; Boyacky is like MacGyver and can build a huge mecha monster even from a minimum of material. Tonzura gives the impression of being a big fighter with a huge heart. Galina and Ally were not very impressive at first, although it was clear they were important to the show after a while. Then there is the mascot, the little pig, which I guess is supposed to be the comic relief, although I did not find it amusing. It would not have changed much if Tonzura had eaten it as he mooted a few times. The ending, as it was, was largely what I expected, although it was slightly surprising, and I have to say that even though this anime series is crazy, I quite liked it, so I am going to award it a weaker four stars.

Maria the Virgin Witch (2015) (series)

English Maria the Virgin Witch has a rather interesting animation style, and the soundtrack is not bad either. However, what stands out (at least initially) most is the story's originality. It is not only interesting, but it portrays some relatively interesting things. It does a pretty good job showing the various evils of that time and the contemporary Church. It also goes into quite a bit of reflection on the meaning of some of the Church's dogmas, and it also, for example, questions the theology of God not intervening in people's lives. Unfortunately, as the episodes go on, some illogical storylines and conclusions rather diminish the philosophical value of this show. Instead of pondering existential themes, I found myself wondering how some things and situations were possible according to how the anime's creators portrayed them. The character of Maria herself is quite good, and she won me over with her desire to do as she sees fit, to live her life on her terms and rebel against accepted divine laws. It is just a real shame that she was the only one who appealed to me, although she is ably assisted by a pretty hilarious succubus and a funny incubus. However, most of the other characters did not appeal to me, and I literally hated some of them, although something tells me that this is probably what the anime's creators intended. This show falls into the realm of ecchi, although its execution is also quite original. It is more about dirty jokes, allusions to Maria's virginity, and last but not least, hints and glimpses of a real sex life. Sure there is no hentai happening on screen, even though sometimes all you need to do is a hint. The beginning was pretty great, and I was even thinking about giving it a full rating. However, around the second third of the season, it started to get a bit scary, to the point where my overall rating, due to things not making much sense anymore, only dropped to a better three stars. Also, although the ending was not terrible (or rather, I was expecting much worse), it did not change my mind. 6/10.

The Rolling Girls (2015) (series)

English Four little girls set out on a journey and into a fight that gives the impression that they are in over their heads, in a very strange world that pretends to have quite a few secrets. However, I have to say that it slowly convinced me of its originality, and although I was not too taken with it at first, I gradually became quite interested. At least now I know what would happen if the green guardian of the universe got beat up and they sent in a backup team to help and fight. SPOILER ALERT I was especially fascinated by the setting and end of the narrative and the fate of the little blonde "octopus" that I had grown to love. SPOILER END Even though the ending was quite over-the-top (there was also a mecha) and extremely colorful, I did find it quite moving. So I will award this show a weak four stars, 6.5/10.

Unlimited Fafnir (2015) (series)

English So there is a magical school, big CGI beasts threatening humanity, girls with special abilities and powers, and a single boy among them. To top it all off, a "transfer student" arrives and claims to be the main male protagonist's fiancée. There are just too many tropes in this show for my taste, so I was not so much into it. Moreover, there are badly designed dragons. For example, White Leviathan looked like a turtle and a narwhal mating product, so he looked more comical than scary to me. Plus, when I saw Basilisk with his "Catastrophe”, I had to laugh out loud. I thought Iris, Tear, and Mitsuki were good. The main male protagonist is quite bland, and the only thing I like about him is that he is nice to the girls. A certain part of me that likes cute anime girls would like to give this some nice ratings. However, all the other parts of my personality prevent it. My brain tells me something about the plot being superficial crap full of various tropes; my eyes tell me that the "dragons" are unwatchable, except maybe my ears are quite satisfied because the soundtrack is quite good. Furthermore, even pride is not going to let me give this show more than a better two stars this time. However, I must also add that I will watch the next season if it comes out because the other part of me wants to know how it turns out with the cute Tear and some other equally cute girls.

Death Parade (2015) (series)

English Death Parade is totally awesome. It has an interesting theme, good atmosphere, it is imaginative (and I really enjoyed reading reviews and speculations of other reviewers about how it actually turned out and why it was so). In the third episode, the anime’s creators are obviously no strangers to making shows touching and moving. I thought it was an awesome show due to the charismatic Decim and the way they gradually reveal the backstory of the mysterious brunette who assists him. Even the ending is good, in my opinion, and I liked it a lot. What is also awesome, in my view, and I have to give it a shout out, even though others have done it, is the opening, which, while it suits the overall feel of this anime series about as well as a laugh at a funeral, has a very nice piece of music. In conclusion, if I take all the anime series from this winter’s releases and subtract all the follow-ups (sequels, season two, etc.), then I can safely say that of the new anime series, Death Parade is clearly the best, in my opinion. So I will award it a well-deserved 9/10.
