Plots(1)

Sarah and Calvin swing, meaning they have a relationship, but they have agreed to stay promiscuous. Calvin calls it a ‘single couple’, while the swinging Gerard and Shannon consider themselves and a friendly couple as ‘two couples who are married’. Over a period of a year, Sex With Strangers follows three couples who have thrown traditional ideas about relationships overboard in their pursuit of sex with strangers. But once frontiers have been pushed back, it is unclear where they stand. Jealousy and lies, aggression and rows inevitably arise. When Calvin marries another woman ‘for tax purposes,’ Sarah stands by crying. And when swinging James suddenly wants to go out without his wife Theresa, she gets so jealous she has to be taken to hospital. The swinger’s lifestyle is competitive, and competitions can be lost. In order to keep up their chances on the singles market, Gerard and Shannon simply have a few silicones implanted - in Shannon, that is. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
