When Mrs. Hegarty Comes to Japan

67-Year old Mrs. Hegarty has finally decided to go to Japan. She regards herself as an ordinary Australian woman, whose interest in Japan was aroused by a ten-year relationship with her adopted Japanese daughter. Her husband Jack, an Irishman, fought in New Guinea during World War II. Four years ago he died and left behind, among other things, a Japanese flag he had captured on the battlefield. Nowadays, Mrs. Hegarty lives retired and alone in Ashfield, a suburb of Sydney. Her adopted Japanese daughter's parents have invited Mrs. Hegarty over to their home in Yokohama for three weeks. They have been running a rice-shop for 36 years. The filmmaker, Mrs. Hegarty's adopted daughter, reports on the meeting of different cultures, on the contrasts between these cultures, and between people of different generations.
