The Berry Hill music scene began in 1969 when Buzz Cason and Bobby Russell moved their publishing company to Bransford Avenue in Berry Hill from Music Row. In 1970, Cason opened Creative Workshop on 2804 Azalea Place. The first successful recordings in the new Creative Workshop were five number one recordings by the Gatlin Brothers. Further hits by Gene Cotton, Kim Carnes, Dottie West, Kenny Rogers, the Doobie Brothers, Olivia Newton-John and Randy VanWarmer followed. Roy Orbison, The Faces, Merle Haggard, Leon Russell and many others recorded at Creative Workshop, including one of the last tracking sessions for Elvis. Originally an engineer at Creative Workshop, Brent Maher returned to the site of Creative Workshop Two, where he recorded all the Judds’ hit records. The studio, known now as Blackbird is owned by John McBride and one of Nashville’s premier recording studios, sound engineer schools and equipment rental companies. By the 90’s, Berry Hill was beginning to explode with restaurants, shops and more recording studios and music businesses. By 2000, House of Blues was created by Memphis native and entrepreneur, Gary Belz. Keith Stegall, producer for all of Alan Jackson’s studio albums which have sold over 80 million units worldwide including 35 number one hits, also opened his studio in Berry Hill where most of Jackson’s recordings were recorded. From a little city’s incorporation in 1950, Berry Hill has proven to be not only a thriving community for businesses, but a friendly and peaceful haven to live and work in, unlike any other community in the Nashville area.
