The year is 1215 and it is winter. A mysterious stranger, an escaped prisoner, arrives in a small isolated village in the Kingdom of France, which is plagued by famine and leprosy and is ruled by the ageing Lord Ocam, a hero of the Crusades. Together with his horde of knights, he abducts a young girl from the village in order to exercise his droit de seigneur over her. A handful of villagers, supported by the stranger, try to release her, but only have until nightfall to do so … Conceived as a mediaeval western, No Gods No Masters takes place in the fantasy-driven crepuscular Middle Ages, at the crossroads of Chang Cheh’s The New One-Armed Swordsman and Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring.
