The poet Félix Grande defined flamenco as "the most important protest song in history". There was a lot of singing against Franco and his sticky shadow. And Manuel Gerena, protest singer par excellence, played a decisive role in the political re-conquest of flamenco in the face of the usurpation by national, Catholic folklore. Character and context are drawn from timely testimonies (from Alfonso Guerra to Gualberto, from Luis Pastor to Eduardo Saborido), to complete the nuances of a nostalgic but very contemporary look. In January 1976, the Seville City Council banned a recital by Gerena in the Lope de Vega and the singer had to sing at the doors of the theatre. Now, more than 40 years later, those doors open to this deserved tribute. (Seville European Film Festival)
