Laci loves the daughter of the inn-keeper, Ilonka, whose father does not want to hear about their marriage. Laci goes to fight in the war in place of the inn-keeper's son. The inn-keeper promises to let his daughter marry him upon his return. Years have passed. The inn-keeper and the cantor look for treasures during the nights. When the father of Laci learns about the death of his son from a letter written by the son of his neighbour, Ilonka is about to marry another man. But the son, believed to have been dead, suddenly returns. Unfortunately, he cannot embrace his lover with both of his hands, one of them has been lost. The inn-keeper does not want to give his daughter to a single-handed man. To help the young lovers, the cunning old Mihály pretends to have found the treasures looked for by the cantor and the inn-keeper for so long, and the inn-keeper happily agrees to keep his former promise.
