Imagining Emanuel

Plots(1)

Twenty years ago, he fled to Ghana from civil-war-torn Liberia and traveled as a stowaway to Norway, where he became nameless immigrant, an anonymous face waiting to be deported. Imagining Emanuel is a contemplative, coolly analytical look at the situation faced by one refugee, and also a sophisticated detective game on the creation of identity. Before the indifferent camera, the African refugee tells his life story in broken English, but nobody seems to be listening. Life is reduced to immigration police files, observation, testimony. A human being woven together from forced identities and Rashomon-like descriptions of events. (Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival)
