A searing and full-bodied political epic in which director/writer/producer/editor and star Mathieu Kassovitz turns his focus to an incident that occurred in 1988 in the French colony of New Caledonia. Philippe Legorjus is an elite counter-terrorism captain flown in with 300 men when a group of indigenous Kanak separatists take 30 French police hostage. The rebels demand independence, and the captain has 10 days to negotiate. But with the army treating the crisis as a war on hostile soil, and an election in France rapidly approaching, Legorjus is confronted with a situation that will push his own morality to the brink. If I hadn't recently seen Hotel Mumbai, I would have rated this higher. This way, the plot seemed a bit boring at times. I understand that when the main character is a negotiator, there will probably be a lot of talking. However, with a running time this long, the film could really use some action. Otherwise, I was very satisfied, I can’t wait for some ex-slaver, ex-colonizer or ex-Nazi country (fill in the names of the countries yourself – they can fall into more than one category) to teach us about human rights and how we should treat our ethnic minorities.
