Animesh remembers the student days of his youth in Calcutta in the 1960s. At university, where he is tempted by communistideas, he ends up joining the Naxalite student movement, which advocates freedom for farmers through armed combat. Madhabilata, the object of Animesh’s affections, disputes this point of view but cuts ties with her family in order to follow her convictions. Through one chapter in India’s political history, the film also tells the story of women’s emancipation. Here it is the women who take concrete actions while the men wage a violent battle that leads to imprisonment and even death. (Festival International du Film de La Rochelle)
