After spending the last seventeen years as a wife and mother, recently divorced Jules (Cox) has reluctantly waded back into the dating pool and quickly finds herself in over her head. Now forty-something and single, Jules tackles real-life issues - dating, parenting and friendship. It doesn't help Jules that her two best friends can hardly stand each other, her ex-husband is hanging around more now than he did during their marriage...and there's that handsome divorced neighbor that Jules can't quite get out of her head. Cougar Town (2009)
No matter how the first few episodes tried to convince me that this would mostly consist of complaining about age and chasing younger people, Bill Lawrence eventually couldn't resist and returned to his true element: the waters of romantic/melancholic relationships, where the absurd humor of Scrubs, utilizing all possible human weaknesses and flattery, reigns supreme. Writing characters that are perfectly crazy and yet close like this truly requires skill. And although it seemed several times that the scripts kept falling apart into family-crazy episodes in an attempt to finally give up on a coherent plot, the quality remained consistently higher during those six seasons than in the very beginning. An inexplicable phenomenon of a TV series and universal optimism in a twenty-minute package.
