The series starred veteran farce actor Robertson Hare as the sherry-tippling Archdeacon - Henry; William Mervyn as the bombastic Bishop wedded to his comforts; Derek Nimmo in the role that made him a star as the Bishop's twittish Chaplain - Noote; and John "I didn't get where I am today..." Barron as the rule-bound Dean. The action surrounds the Bishop's attempts to lead an easy life, an idea which is alien to the reforming Dean. Involving the Archdeacon and his Chaplain in his schemes, the Bishop always opposes the Dean and frequently attempts to undermine or avoid him. Running to five series in total, All Gas and Gaiters was a monster hit for the BBC.
