Bob Maconel (Christian Slater), is having a bad day. Mentally unstable, toiling away in a lonely cubicle, constantly disrespected by his superiors, he dreams of murdering his co-workers. Beaten to the punch by a fellow office nut, Bob kills him in defense and becomes a hero. Promoted by his boss (William H. Macy) to suspicious vocational heights, Bob must deal with Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert), his workplace fancy, now suicidal and paralyzed by the shooting. From potential killer to inadvertent hero, Bob saves Vanessa only to have her ask him to kill her. English Unusually told story, highly sensitive romance, and occasionally some healthy sarcasm, so that we wouldn't drown in that nervously trembling hope. And on top of it all, unfortunately, the final quarter-hour that ruins all the carefully built-up mood and proves that the script was not a careful path to catharsis for everyone involved, but just a meaningless dead end with interesting detours that the story merely passed by. Excellent actors, imaginative direction by Cappello, but the script is seriously a betrayal. ()
