The Girl Next Door unfolds in a quiet suburban town in the summer of 1958. 12-year old David Moran discovers that his next-door neighbours, the Chandlers, have adopted two girls; Megan Loughlin and her younger sister Susan, recently orphaned in a terrible car crash, leaving them in the care of their mentally unstable aunt Ruth. David befriends the older of the two girls, and as he falls in love with her, he begins to notice that the girls’ presence in the house next door seems to provoke inexplicable jealousy and resentment from their aunt. Ruth’s hostility towards the two girls soon escalates from mere verbal insults to physical abuse, involving her three young sons, the neighbourhood children, and 12-year-old David whose life will be changed forever. English The American movie adaptation of The Girl Next Door was not a great success. It did not have a strong and oppressive atmosphere. It was also missing the interesting characters that had incredible depth. With The Girl Next Door, you realize that sometimes a literal translation of a book just does not work, and this is very literal. In addition, the movie just does not feel right. I recommend reading the book because it would have a bigger impact on you. ()
