English A well-executed melodrama brimming with emotions and various relationships, capable of giving viewers a bit of a scare. While the show often maintains a very pleasant and comforting atmosphere (sometimes lulling viewers into a false sense of security), the moments when things go wrong and the story takes a serious turn hit even harder. The setting, where humans coexist with various Japanese supernatural (folklore) beings, adds an intriguing dimension to the drama and character interactions. It allows the story to explore themes like the differing lifespans between humans and yokai, and what that means for both species, along with other supernatural-related issues. I was also pleasantly surprised by the various universes/realities and how they interact (such as the local demons, Oni), including the possibility that one of the parallel realities in this anime might be our normal world. The world-building here is filled with brilliant ideas; some might seem a bit far-fetched, but the magical aspect makes it easy to suspend disbelief. Moreover, much of the mysticism follows specific rules, often rooted in Japanese folklore and literature, which the series introduces and adheres to. The characters are numerous and well-developed (and distinct, which makes them easy to recognize). The story revolves heavily around their interactions and personal growth. Though the characters can be somewhat black-and-white in line with the melodramatic genre, their inner struggles and problems add depth to them. The animation is also commendable, featuring a unique style and consistently solid quality throughout. Overall, I really enjoyed Tonari no Yokai-san. It effectively conveyed its atmosphere and evoked genuine emotions in me. While it may not be unforgettable, it’s definitely an original and well-crafted melodrama. I'd give it a solid 7.4/10. ()
