For Agent J, it is another day at the office, monitoring, licensing and policing all alien activity on Earth. One day, J receives a report of an unauthorized landing of an alien spacecraft near New York. It is an old enemy of MIB, a Kylothian named Surleena. Who is searching for a powerful artifact called The Light of Zartha. J investigates and quickly realizes he is going to need help. Unfortunately, the other MIB agents do not work up to par like J can. So, J decides to bring back K. J must bring back K's memory as an MIB agent and try to stop Surleena, before she can succeed. It’s still quite funny at times, but it's definitely not a big hit. The film relies on entertaining and well-known characters because otherwise, it would be a total disaster. The story is very formulaic and only tries to shock with grand effects, which look quite bad these days. But I like these two, and Tommy Lee Jones is a great comedic actor. ()
Men in Black had originality and flair. The sequel tries to maintain a similar style, but what works in it is merely a rehash or imitation of the original. While there are plenty of "jokes," many of them don't land, and others are too cheap. The film doesn't hold together, and only a few successful scenes remain memorable. Overall impression: 40%. ()
But there’s almost no story. Without the funny scenes, that excellent pair Jones & Smith, Frank and the worms, it would be a complete crock. In terms of special effects, MIIBis of course perfect (Spielberg made sure of that), but no amount of tricks can make up for a screenplay full of plotholes. And MiB had so much potential after part one. I’m disappointed. So I rather hope that someone will write an ingenious screenplay and make everything right in MIIIB. But for that, someone would have to want to see a number three. ()
Although the first installment was more consistent, the sequel does not bring any embarrassing shame to it. Frank adds a few successful lines, the locker at the station brings you to your knees, and if it weren't for the final climax, MIBII would have been much more tolerable. Given the hectic pacing, however, it remains flavorless on the tongue. ()
Men in Black II is a misguided and spasmodic patchwork of spectacular scenes, a third of which could have been cut out and no on would have been worse off for it. But then the film would have been an “unusable” 60 minutes. I’m actually asking myself why I’m giving it three stars. Maybe just for the divine dog. ()
